Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roll up garage door?

A roll up garage door is a vertically opening door that coils around a drum above the door opening, offering a space-saving, secure, and stylish solution for residential garages. Its design maximizes garage space and provides high security and reliable automatic operation.

How is a roll up garage door different from a traditional garage door?

Unlike traditional sectional doors that open upwards and into the garage ceiling space, roll up doors coil neatly into a drum above the opening, saving valuable overhead space. This design difference makes roll up doors ideal for tight spaces and offers a sleek, modern aesthetic with enhanced durability.

How much do roll up garage doors cost?

At The Rolling Doors, we offer new garage doors, custom-made and fully installed. The price of a roll up garage door starts at approximately $3800 for the standard 8×7 garage door profile. Larger garage doors will be more expensive. A 16×7 garage door (ie. double door size) will be approximately $5800. All prices are for supply and installation in the Greater Toronto Area.

All our custom roll up garage doors are priced with an automatic garage door opener included, and safety features like photo sensors and manual override.

Are roll up garage doors more expensive?

Yes, our roll up doors are more expensive than most traditional garage doors. Our roll up garage doors start at about $3800 (installation included) while a standard overhead door typically costs around $1400 – $2500 (installation included).

Our garage doors are the premium option for homeowners and have several benefits over traditional garage doors.

Are roll up garage doors insulated?

Yes, our garage doors have a polyurethane core for insulation. All our roll up doors and shutters are fabricated with a triple layer of aluminum – polyurethane foam – aluminum. The foam insulation is the core of the door – inside the aluminum shell of the door.

This insulation serves two purposes:

First, it provides a level of thermoregulation that helps to keep your garage warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Second, the foam insulation provides a measure of security. It is the strong buffer that prevents intruders from puncturing or cutting the door with burglary tools. The insulation also prevents denting from any accidents that happen.

What sizes do roll up garage doors come in?

Our roll up garage doors are custom made and can be fit into almost any space – with precision cutting to the absolute millimetre.

The maximum width for our garage doors is almost 20 feet wide. Maximum height will depend on the width of the doorframe, but in most cases, 8 feet tall is not a problem for installation.

The most popular dimensions that our customers request are 8×7, 10×7, 12×7 and 16×7. Smaller garages (or sheds) sometimes have a door frame of 6×7 and 7×7, which is fine – as long as there is space for the motor.

How much overhead clearance do you need for a roll up garage door?

A roll up garage door “rolls up” into a compact storage box that is installed above the door frame. This box can be placed on either outside or inside the garage ie. either side of the door frame.

At least 12 inches of overhead clearance space is required for the storage box to be installed. The ideal amount of space is about 14 inches.

Are roll up garage doors secure?

Yes! Roll up garage doors are known for their robust security features. They have almost no grasp points and their spring coiled mechanism keeps the door firmly shut against the ground.

Our residential roll up garage doors have a triple-layer fabrication composed of aluminum – polyurethane – aluminum, which makes them highly resistant to piercing or puncturing from burglary tools.

Our doors also come with a variety of access options for you to choose from. You can control your garage door with a remote control, wall-mounted keypad or our smartphone app. (Smartphone app requires extra purchase of an external wifi unit.

Can roll up garage doors be automated?

Yes! Our residential roll up garage doors are installed with an automatic motorized opener that opens and closes the door at the touch of a button. Our ultra-quiet motors can be activated via remote control, access keypad or via our smartphone app. The smartphone app lets you control your garage door opener from anywhere, as long as you have a data connection. (Smartphone app requires purchase of external wifi unit)

Are roll up doors reliable? Do they require maintenance?

Our roll up garage doors are manufactured with reliability and security as top priorities. Roll up doors are more reliable than traditional garage doors for opening and closing smoothly and on demand.

This is because roll up garage doors have fewer moving parts than traditional overhead doors. Most garage doors will require a budget set aside for repairs and maintenance, but this is not the case with roll up doors.

Generally, under normal operating environments and conditions your roll up garage door will not require any maintenance.

One important note for Canadian homeowners is to clear snow and ice away from the area where the door contacts the ground. An obstruction could potentially damage the motor over the long term, but as long as the area is cleared there should be no problems.
